An IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted by Australia's Department of Home Affairs “for eligible visas”, accepted by Ahpra and the National Boards for health practitioner registration, and not accepted at all by IRCC for Canada's Express Entry. The service has the same hard limits wherever you send it: your original test must have been an IELTS on computer, you get one retake per full test, and you must sit it within 60 days of that test.
That single difference between Australia and Canada is the most expensive thing on this page. If you are half a band short in one component, Australia may let you fix that one component; Canada makes you sit all four again at the full price. Everything below is quoted from the regulators' own pages, checked on 1 October 2026.
Who accepts an IELTS One Skill Retake
| Where you are sending the result | Accepted? | What is published | What you have to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia — visa English levels (Department of Home Affairs) | Yes, but only “for eligible visas” | The same sentence appears on all five English level pages — Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English | Open your own visa subclass page and check it before you book |
| Australia — Ahpra and the National Boards (health practitioner registration) | Yes | Named explicitly, and it is not counted as an additional test sitting | Keep the retake inside the same 12-month window as the sittings you rely on |
| Canada — IRCC, Express Entry | No | Stated as a flat refusal on the Express Entry language test page | Sit a full IELTS General Training again — all four components |
| United Kingdom — UKVI | Yes, in selected locations | IELTS states UKVI accepts it for Academic and General Training on computer, in selected locations only | Confirm with the test centre that your location is one of them |
| Universities, employers and every other receiving body | Only if they have opted in | Acceptance is opt-in: an organisation has to tell IELTS it accepts retake results | Ask the organisation directly, in writing, before booking |
Home Affairs words it the same way on every English level page, and the qualifier is doing real work:
“The department accepts IELTS test results that include One Skill Retake (OSR) for eligible visas. To find out if you are eligible, check the relevant visa page.”
— Department of Home Affairs, Competent English
Ahpra is more generous and says so plainly:
“National Boards have agreed to accept the IELTS One Skill Retake to provide further flexibility to applicants applying for registration. This is not available for the other accepted English language tests.”
— Ahpra, Accepted English language tests
IRCC needs one sentence:
“We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.”
— Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Express Entry: Language test results
The rules IELTS itself publishes
These conditions are set by IELTS, not by the organisation reading your result. If you break one of them there is no retake to send anywhere.
| Condition | What applies in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Which tests | IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training |
| Format of the original test | It must have been an IELTS on computer test. A paper test cannot be followed by a retake |
| How many components | Any one of Listening, Reading, Writing or Speaking |
| How many retakes | One per full test |
| Deadline | Within 60 days of the original test day |
| Where | Only at a centre that offers it — confirm this before booking the full test, not after |
| Results | Within 3–5 days |
| What you receive | A new Test Report Form with the retaken score plus the other three from the original test; the retaken score is marked “retake” and the overall band score is updated. You choose which Test Report Form to use |
IELTS states the eligibility test as a list you have to satisfy in full:
“you have completed a full test at a centre that offers IELTS One Skill Retake / your full test was an IELTS on computer test / you sit your IELTS One Skill Retake within 60 days of your full IELTS test.”
— IELTS, IELTS One Skill Retake
And on who will take it, IELTS puts the responsibility on you rather than on the receiving body:
“We recommend that you check with the organisation directly to see if they accept IELTS One Skill Retake before booking your test.”
— IELTS, IELTS One Skill Retake
How a retake combines with two sittings for Ahpra
Ahpra lets you build a passing result out of two sittings, and the retake sits inside that arithmetic rather than beside it. The 12-month window is what most people get wrong.
| What you are submitting | Accepted? | The rule behind it |
|---|---|---|
| One full sitting meeting all four minimum scores | Yes | The ordinary case. From 23 April 2026 that means IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in Writing |
| One full sitting plus a One Skill Retake | Yes | The retake is not treated as a second sitting, and it must fall within 60 days of the test it fixes |
| Two full sittings | Yes | Both sittings must meet the standard's requirements and the dates must be no more than 12 months apart |
| Two full sittings plus a One Skill Retake | Yes, with one condition | All three must have been completed within the same 12-month period |
| An IELTS result combined with a PTE Academic or OET result | No | Results from different test providers cannot be combined |
The three-document version of that rule, in Ahpra's own words:
“Successful completion of an IELTS One Skill Retake is not considered an additional test sitting by National Boards; however, if you are relying on results from two test sittings and an IELTS One Skill Retake, all three of these tests must have been completed within a 12-month period.”
— Ahpra, Accepted English language tests
The minimum scores behind that first row changed on 23 April 2026, and they are the same for every National Board bar one. We set them out board by board in the English score Ahpra wants, profession by profession.
Why Canada's refusal costs the most
For an Australian visa, the English level you are aiming at is defined component by component, so a single weak component is the whole problem — and sometimes a single retake is the whole fix. We list the exact numbers for all five levels in the five English levels for an Australian visa.
Express Entry works the same way arithmetically — your lowest component decides your CLB level — but IRCC will not look at a retake, so the only route back is a full test. Half a band in Listening therefore costs a full test fee in Canada and a partial one in Australia. The CLB conversion tables are in our Ukrainian-language guide to IELTS scores and CLB levels for Canada, and the published fees for both options are in English test fees in Australia in 2026.
What this means for you
- Decide where the result is going before you book the full test. The retake only exists if your original test was on computer at a centre that offers it. That decision is made weeks before you know your score.
- If Canada is anywhere in your plan, do not rely on the retake. IRCC's refusal is unconditional for Express Entry. A result built with a retake is usable in Australia and unusable there.
- “For eligible visas” is not boilerplate. Home Affairs sends you to your own subclass page on purpose. Read that page, not a summary of it — including ours.
- Health practitioners get the clearest deal. Ahpra names the retake, accepts it, and does not spend one of your two sittings on it. The 60-day and 12-month clocks still run.
- 60 days starts on your original test day, not on your results day. Results arrive a few days in, so the usable window is shorter than it looks.
- You keep both Test Report Forms. If the retake goes worse than the original, you can send the original instead.
This page sets out what the regulators and the test owner have published. It is not advice about your own application — check your case with Ahpra or your National Board, and anything visa-related with your own registered migration agent.
Frequently asked questions
Does Australia accept IELTS One Skill Retake for a visa?
For eligible visas, yes. All five English level pages — Functional, Vocational, Competent, Proficient and Superior English — carry the same sentence: the department accepts IELTS results that include One Skill Retake for eligible visas, and directs you to the relevant visa page to find out whether yours is one of them. There is no published master list of eligible subclasses, so the visa page is the only place to check.
Can I use a One Skill Retake for Canadian permanent residence?
Not through Express Entry. IRCC's language test page says it in one line: “We don't accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry.” You would need to sit a full IELTS General Training again, all four components.
Does Ahpra count a One Skill Retake as a second test sitting?
No. Ahpra states that a successful One Skill Retake is not considered an additional test sitting. But if you are also relying on two full sittings, all three tests must fall inside one 12-month period.
How long do I have to book a One Skill Retake?
Sixty days from your original test day, and only one retake per full test. IELTS results for the retake itself arrive within 3–5 days.
Can I do a One Skill Retake after a paper IELTS test?
No. IELTS requires that your full test was an IELTS on computer test, taken at a centre that offers the retake. If you sat on paper, the only way to change a component score is a full test.
Which component should I retake if two are weak?
You cannot retake two — it is one component per full test. If two components are below the threshold you need, a retake does not solve your problem and a full sitting does. Comparing the thresholds first is the cheaper move, and our comparison of the best English tests in 2026 lays the component requirements side by side.
Will my university accept a retake result?
Only if it has opted in. IELTS publishes a list of organisations that have registered to accept retake results, and advises test takers to check with the organisation directly before booking. An institution's general “we accept IELTS” statement does not answer this question.
Preparing for the component that is actually holding you back
Green School, an online school in Australia, has been preparing candidates for English exams since 2018 and has worked with more than 3,500 students across the exams it teaches. When one component is the obstacle, the useful work is narrow: Writing task structure, or Speaking fluency under timing, rather than another pass over the whole test. What our students report is that the retake window is tight enough that preparation has to start before results arrive, not after.
