IELTS Preparation Success: Student Accepted to an Australian University

IELTS Preparation Success Story: From Band 5.5 to University Admission in Australia

How a combination of group IELTS classes and one-to-one coaching helped Artem achieve his goal

Preparing for the IELTS exam is rarely a straight line. Many students improve their English, take the test, and then discover that they still need a slightly higher score to meet university entry requirements.

That was exactly the situation Artem found himself in.

This case study shows how combining group IELTS preparation with personalised one-to-one coaching helped him improve his score, receive a university offer, and begin his studies in Australia.

Goal of IELTS preparation: achieve the required IELTS score for admission to an Australian university

The Challenge

Artem joined Green English School at the end of February with one clear objective:

to achieve the IELTS score required for university admission in Australia.

Like many students, his English was already at a solid intermediate level, but university entry required stronger exam performance, particularly in reading, listening, and exam strategy.

Our first recommendation was to start with our IELTS Academic group course.

Stage One: Building the Foundation in Group IELTS Classes

Artem studied in our IELTS preparation group with teachers Mila and Simona.

Although he was significantly younger than most students in the class, he quickly adapted to the learning environment and actively participated in every lesson.

During this stage we focused on:

  • IELTS task types
  • exam strategies
  • academic vocabulary
  • grammar improvement
  • writing structure
  • speaking confidence
  • weekly practice tests

Group classes provided exactly what many students need during the early stages of IELTS preparation:

  • regular speaking practice;
  • exposure to common mistakes;
  • motivation from classmates;
  • structured progression through every exam module.

First IELTS Attempt

After several months of preparation, Artem took the IELTS Academic test.

His results showed clear progress.

Skill First IELTS Score
Listening 5.5
Reading 5.0
Writing 6.0
Speaking 6.0
Overall 5.5

    Unfortunately, the overall score was still below the university requirement.

    This is actually a very common situation.

    Many students are only 0.5 band short of their target, meaning they no longer need a complete course—they need focused work on specific weaknesses.

    Stage Two: Switching to Individual IELTS Coaching

    After analysing Artem's results, we recommended moving to individual lessons with Mila.

    Instead of following a general course syllabus, every lesson was built around his personal performance.

    The focus shifted to:

    • improving weaker IELTS skills;
    • eliminating recurring mistakes;
    • intensive exam practice;
    • personalised feedback;
    • timed mock tests;
    • targeted vocabulary development.

    This is where one-to-one tuition often makes the biggest difference.

    Rather than spending time on skills the student already performs well in, every lesson directly targets the areas that will increase the final IELTS score.

    Final IELTS Results

    Several weeks later Artem retook the exam.

    His new results were:

    Skill Final IELTS Score
    Listening 6.0
    Reading 5.5
    Writing 6.0
    Speaking 6.5
    Overall 6.0

      While the increase may look small numerically, in university admissions half a band can completely change a student's future.

      This score allowed Artem to receive an offer from an Australian university.

      University Admission

      After achieving the required IELTS result, Artem successfully received:

      • university admission;
      • his student visa;
      • an offer to study in Australia.

      Today he is studying at an Australian university.

      Even more importantly, his family trusted us again.

      Following Artem's success, his mother has now enrolled his older son—who is already studying at an Australian university—to continue improving his English towards a C1 level.

      For us, repeat trust from the same family is one of the strongest indicators that our teaching approach delivers real results.

      This score allowed Artem to receive an offer from an Australian university.

      Student Feedback

      Following his admission, Artem left the following review:

      "Excellent teachers who genuinely care about their students' progress. I'd especially like to thank Mila for her professionalism, clear lesson plans and structured approach. Everything was easy to understand. Thank you, Green English School, for the lessons and the experience with native speakers."

      His family later confirmed that he had not only improved his IELTS score but had also received both his university offer and student visa.
