Why General English and Exam Preparation Should Work Together
Many English courses focus on one thing: helping students speak more confidently.
And yes, speaking matters. Fluency matters. Being able to have a conversation without translating every sentence in your head matters.
But at Green School, we believe a strong English course should give you something more: a solid language foundation that can eventually take you to IELTS, PTE, CELPIP or another international English exam.
That is why even our General English courses include elements of the skills students will later need for academic study, international exams, work and immigration.
General English Is More Than Conversation Practice
There are countless English courses and apps promising to help students finally “start speaking”.
Conversation practice is certainly important, but speaking alone does not necessarily mean that your English is progressing in a balanced way.
A strong language programme should develop all four key skills:
- Speaking
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
It should also help students improve grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the ability to express increasingly complex ideas accurately.
At Green School, we monitor students’ progress across these areas and adapt the programme to their strengths and weaknesses.
The goal is not simply to make you speak more. It is to help you become a confident and accurate English user.
Why We Include Exam Skills in General English
Green School specialises in preparation for international English language exams.
This influences the way we teach General English as well.
It does not mean that General English students spend their lessons completing IELTS or PTE exercises when they are not preparing for an exam.
Instead, we build the underlying skills that international exams eventually test.
Students learn how to organise their ideas, understand increasingly complex texts, listen for important information, expand their vocabulary and communicate with greater accuracy.
So if you decide later that you need IELTS for university, PTE for Australia or CELPIP for Canada, you are not starting from zero.
You already have the foundation.
English Exams Are Often Part of a Much Bigger Goal
For many of our students, an English exam is not the final destination.
It is one step towards something much bigger.
It may be studying at a university abroad, applying for a visa, moving to Australia or Canada, getting professional recognition or starting a new career in an English-speaking country.
That is why we approach exam preparation differently.
We want our students to achieve the score they need, but we also want the English they learn during preparation to remain useful after the exam is over.
A high test score is important. Being able to study, work and live confidently in English afterwards is even more important.
IELTS, PTE and CELPIP Preparation
Our main group exam preparation programmes include:
IELTS preparation for students who need English for university, work, professional registration or migration.
PTE preparation, particularly popular among students planning to study, work or migrate to Australia.
CELPIP preparation for students pursuing their goals in Canada.
For students with more specific requirements, we can also provide individual preparation for exams such as NAATI CCL, OET, Duolingo English Test (DET), LanguageCert and MET, as well as other specialised English tests.
This allows us to work not only with different English levels but also with very different end goals.
Learn From Teachers Who Know the Exams
One of the most important differences between general language teaching and serious exam preparation is knowing exactly what the exam requires.
Our exam preparation teachers have taken the exams they teach themselves. They understand the format, assessment criteria, common mistakes and the areas where students tend to lose marks.
Green School founder Tatiana Green is a former IELTS examiner, and the school itself was built around language assessment and international exam preparation.
This experience influences our approach even when we teach General English.
We do not separate “English for life” and “English for exams” into two completely different worlds.
Good English should prepare you for both.
From General English to Your Target Score
A student may come to Green School simply wanting to improve their conversational English.
Later, the goal may change.
Perhaps you decide to apply to university. Perhaps Australia becomes the next destination. Perhaps you discover that you need IELTS, PTE or CELPIP for an immigration pathway.
When the language foundation is already there, moving into focused exam preparation becomes much easier.
And when you complete an exam preparation course, the goal is not simply to walk into the test centre hoping for the required score.
You should understand the exam, know your strengths and weaknesses, recognise the common traps and have a clear strategy for each part of the test.
Most importantly, the English you have developed should still be there when the exam is over.
