IELTS Preparation Tips: How Irina Reached Her Target Score

Preparing for IELTS is not only about learning grammar, memorising vocabulary or completing endless practice tests. You also need to understand the exam, practise under realistic conditions and learn how to use the English you already know effectively.

One of our Green School students, Irina, needed an IELTS score of 5.0. After approximately six months of preparation, she took the exam and achieved 5.5.

After the test, Irina shared several things that helped her during IELTS preparation - from turning everyday life into Listening practice to avoiding burnout before the exam.

Here are her six practical IELTS tips.

1. Practise IELTS Speaking with Different People

Your IELTS Speaking examiner may be completely different from the person you imagined while preparing.

Different people speak, listen, react and maintain eye contact differently. Even if the structure of the IELTS Speaking test is familiar, the human factor can make the real exam feel different from your lessons.

That is why Irina recommends practising with different teachers before the test.

The goal is not simply to prepare answers. You also want to become comfortable speaking English with unfamiliar people, so meeting a new examiner on test day does not become an additional source of stress.

2. Make English Listening Part of Your Everyday Life

IELTS Listening preparation does not have to stop when you close your textbook.

Irina tried to surround herself with English outside her lessons. She watched videos and TV series in English, encouraged her daughters to watch cartoons in the original language and even changed the GPS in her car to English.

These small changes create additional listening practice without adding another formal study session to your day.

If you are preparing for IELTS, look for opportunities to hear English regularly - not only in IELTS practice tests, but in normal everyday situations.

3. Be Careful with Multiple Choice Questions

One of Irina's observations concerns IELTS Listening Multiple Choice questions.

If you hear wording that exactly matches one of the answer options, do not automatically assume that it is correct.

IELTS questions can include distractors: you may hear information connected to an answer before the speaker clarifies, changes or contradicts it.

So instead of choosing an answer simply because you recognise the same words, listen for the meaning of the complete statement.

This is especially important for students whose English is not yet very strong, as familiar words can easily attract your attention.

4. Practise IELTS Tasks Under Time Limits

Knowing how to complete an IELTS task is one thing. Being able to complete it within the time available on the real exam is another.

Irina particularly recommends timed practice for Writing.

If you always give yourself extra time at home, it can be extremely difficult to suddenly adjust to strict exam conditions on test day.

Use a timer during your IELTS preparation and gradually become comfortable working within the actual limits.

You are training not only your English, but also your ability to make decisions and organise your answer under pressure.

5. Don't Burn Yourself Out Before IELTS

More preparation is not always better.

Before her exam, Irina was studying intensely and reached the point where she was almost burned out.

Her Green School teacher, Mila, advised her to take a break.

Irina followed that advice and now considers it an important part of her preparation.

Your physical and emotional state matters on exam day. IELTS requires concentration across several different skills, so exhausting yourself immediately before the test can work against you.

Prepare consistently, but leave room for rest and recovery too.

6. Use Your Own Life to Prepare for IELTS Speaking

You do not need to invent a completely new story for every possible IELTS Speaking topic.

Instead, Irina prepared real experiences from her own life that could naturally work for several topics.

For example, her family has a tradition of making pancakes every Saturday morning. She realised that the same experience could help her talk about topics such as:

  • traditions;
  • teaching a skill;
  • a favourite meal.

This makes IELTS Speaking preparation more manageable and can help your answers sound more natural.

Rather than memorising dozens of artificial answers, think about your own family, work, hobbies, traditions, travels and experiences. One real story can often be adapted to several different questions.

What Can We Learn from Irina's IELTS Experience?

Irina needed IELTS 5.0, prepared for approximately six months and achieved 5.5.

Her experience is a useful reminder that IELTS preparation is not only about doing more exercises.

It is also about learning how the exam works, practising with realistic time limits, becoming comfortable speaking to different people, bringing English into everyday life and knowing when to rest.

At Green School, we prepare students for IELTS with their individual target score, current English level and timeframe in mind.

Our teachers help students understand their weak points, develop all four IELTS skills and become comfortable with the format before the real test.

If IELTS is part of your plans for study, work or immigration, starting several months in advance gives you time to prepare consistently instead of trying to fit everything into the final few weeks.
